Description

Inspire. Educate. Lead.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island seeks a visionary, hands-on Director to oversee the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium —a flagship destination of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island that connects thousands of visitors each year to the beauty and importance of the natural world.

If you are passionate about environmental stewardship, thrive in dynamic, mission-driven organization, and have the leadership chops to guide operations, exhibits, programs, and community engagement, this is your opportunity to make a real difference.

As Director, you’ll be the operational and creative force behind one of Rhode Island’s most visited environmental education centers. You’ll shape exhibits and programs that educate and inspire, drive community outreach and marketing initiatives, and lead a team dedicated to conservation and public engagement.

What You’ll Do

Leadership & Management

  • Lead day-to-day operations, ensuring exceptional visitor experiences and a collaborative team culture.
  • Manage and mentor staff, interns, and volunteers to uphold Audubon’s standards of excellence.

Exhibits & Education

  • Design innovative exhibits and programs rooted in science and aligned with Audubon’s mission.
  • Partner with educators, conservationists, and scientists to create impactful experiences for visitors of all ages.

Marketing & Outreach

  • Collaborate with communications and development teams to promote programs and events across digital and traditional platforms.
  • Be a visible ambassador for the Nature Center at conferences, public events, and in the media.

Budget & Fundraising

  • Develop and manage the Center’s annual budget.
  • Pursue funding opportunities including grants, sponsorships, and donor partnerships.
  • Help grow our base of community and corporate support.

Community Engagement

  • Build and nurture relationships with schools, community organizations, and local leaders.
  • Expand and oversee volunteer engagement programs.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Education, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role within a museum, aquarium, nature center, or nonprofit education setting.
  • Demonstrated success in program development, team management, fundraising, and marketing.
  • Strong public speaking and community engagement skills.
  • Passion for environmental conservation and education.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends.

Why Audubon Society of Rhode Island?

  • Be part of a respected, statewide conservation organization with over a century of impact.
  • Work at a beloved public center located on a 28-acre wildlife refuge just minutes from Narragansett Bay.
  • Join a mission-driven team that values education, inclusion, and protecting Rhode Island’s natural heritage.
